What Does Maths Look Like in Reception?

Reception is your child’s first year at school, and maths may not always look the way you expect. You might not see lots of worksheets or calculations as much of their learning will happen through play, practical experiences and exploration.

At this stage, rather than simply learning to count or memorise facts, your child will be beginning to understand what numbers really mean, notice patterns and relationships, and develop the confidence to explore and make sense of mathematical ideas.

This understanding develops gradually and your child will need plenty of opportunities to explore ideas, come back to them and experience them in different ways as they begin to make sense of how everything fits together.

You can support this by giving your child opportunities to:

  • Explore numbers in real ways: Counting, comparing, sharing and noticing amounts.
  • Learn through play: Building, sorting, creating patterns and solving problems.
  • Repeat and revisit: Exploring ideas in different ways until understanding becomes more secure.
  • Talk and think: Explaining what they notice, making predictions and asking questions.
  • Build confidence: Having time to try, make mistakes, change their mind and work things out.

What Your Child Is Beginning to Explore

Reception is where many of the early maths ideas your child has met through play begin to develop further. They’ll start to look more closely at how numbers work, make connections between different ideas and use what they know in new ways.

In Reception, your child will begin exploring four main areas of maths:

  • Number Sense


    Understanding what numbers mean, not just being able to say them. For example, learning that the final number they say when counting tells them how many there are altogether.

  • Shape, Space & Measure

    Exploring exploring shapes, position, size, length, weight, capacity and time through practical experiences.

  • Patterns


    Spotting, continuing and creating patterns, and beginning to explain what comes next.

  • Problem Solving & Mathematical Thinking

    Trying different ideas, making predictions, explaining their thinking and working things out for themselves.
