What Does Maths Look Like in Year 2?

By Year 2, lots of the maths your child has met before will start to come together in new ways. They’ll be working with bigger numbers, tackling more calculations and becoming more confident using what they already know to work things out.

But growing in maths isn’t just about doing harder sums or getting quicker at answers. It’s about understanding what they’re doing, spotting connections and having the confidence to think, try different ideas and keep going when something feels tricky.

And there are plenty of opportunities for that outside school. Games, cooking, shopping, telling the time or simply wondering about something together can all give your child a chance to use their maths in ways that feel real.

What Your Child Is Beginning to Explore

In Year 2, your child will build on lots of the maths they already know and start exploring it in new ways. Numbers will get bigger, calculations will become a little more involved, and they’ll discover more about how different ideas in maths connect to one another.

For example, 2 × 5 = 10 won't just be just another fact to remember. Your child will explore how it connects to 5 + 5 = 10, 10 ÷ 2 = 5, or sharing 10 into two equal groups of five. Making these connections will help maths make more sense and give them more ways to work things out.

Here are the key maths ideas your child will meet along the way:

  • Number & Place Value

Getting more confident with numbers to 100 and how they fit together.

  • Addition & Subtraction

Working with bigger numbers and finding quicker ways to work things out.

  • Multiplication, Division & Fractions

Getting to know times tables, sharing equally and finding parts of a whole.

  • Measurement

Measuring more accurately and making sense of money and time.

  • Geometry

Looking more closely at shapes and how they move and turn.

  • Statistics

Using charts and tables to find and compare information.
