What Does Maths Look Like at Pre-school?

Many of us hear the word “maths” and think about numbers, sums, worksheets or getting answers right, but pre-school maths looks very different.

At this age, children are beginning to make sense of ideas such as quantity, pattern, shape and space through play, exploration, conversation and everyday experiences.

What really matters is giving children opportunities to:

  • Learn by doing: Exploring, experimenting and getting hands-on.
  • Learn through play: Building, sorting, and solving simple problems.
  • Repeat and revisit: Strengthening understanding and confidence over time.
  • Talk and wonder: Noticing, predicting, questioning and sharing their ideas.
  • Build confidence: Having time to think, make mistakes and try again.

These small, everyday moments help nurture curious, confident children and build strong foundations for the maths learning ahead.

What Your Child Is Beginning to Explore

Every child develops differently, and during the pre-school years children will be exploring different ideas at different times. Some will love counting, while others will be more interested in building, sorting, patterns, puzzles or imaginative play. That’s completely normal.

Through play and everyday experiences, your child will gradually begin exploring four key areas of early maths. These areas will often overlap naturally through play, routines, conversations, games and everyday life, helping them notice relationships, solve simple problems and make sense of the world around them.

  • Number Sense


    Counting, comparing amounts and beginning to understand what numbers mean.

  • Shape, Space & Measure

    Exploring shapes, sizes, position and how things fit together.

  • Patterns


    Noticing, copying and predicting what comes next.

  • Problem Solving & Mathematical Thinking

    Experimenting, making predictions and trying different ways to solve simple problems.
