How Can I Help Support My Child With Their Maths?

If you’d like to help your child with maths, it can be difficult to know what that should actually look like. Should you practise what they’re learning? Find activities? Ask questions? And what will actually help them understand the maths, rather than simply practise getting the right answer?

But helping can be much simpler than you might think. Through play, conversation, hands-on experiences and everyday moments, you can build on what your child is learning, help ideas make sense and enjoy some maths together.

Here are some of the things that can really help:


1. Make Maths Something Your Child Can See And Explore

One of the best ways you can help is to give your child opportunities to see and experience the maths they’re learning, rather than only talking about it.

And it can be really simple. For example, if your child is exploring the number 5, you could find five cars, build a tower with five blocks, show five fingers or spot the numeral 5 when you’re out and about. Each time, they’re meeting 5 in a slightly different way — as a written number, an amount they can count, something they can build and something they can see around them. Over time, those experiences help them build a much richer understanding of what 5 actually means.

The same idea works with lots of maths. You can:

  • Add and subtract by starting with a few toys, adding some more or taking some away and seeing what happens.
  • Explore sharing by sharing strawberries between two plates and working out how to make it fair.
  • Compare and measure by finding which toy is longer, which container holds more or which tower is tallest.
  • Explore shape and pattern by building, making patterns and noticing shapes around you.

You don’t need to turn any of this into a lesson. Simply give your child something to do with the maths, talk about what’s happening and explore it together.


2. Make the Most of the Maths That Happens Naturally

Not every bit of maths needs to start with an activity. Lots of opportunities to explore maths come up naturally in everyday family life. You might be dividing strawberries between two children, checking whether you have enough plates for everyone, following a recipe, working out how long it is until bedtime or trying to fit everything into a bag.

When those moments come up, use them. Instead of doing the thinking for your child straight away, you could bring them into it:

“We need one fork for everyone. How many should we get?”

“We’ve got eight strawberries. How could we share them between the two of you?”

“This needs 200ml of milk. Can you help me measure it?”

“Do you think that will fit in here? How could we find out?”

These little moments give your child a chance to use their maths to work something out, solve a problem, or help with something you're doing together. And you don't need to plan an activity or find extra time for it. 


3. Talk About Maths Together

Talking about maths doesn’t have to mean asking your child lots of questions. You can notice things, wonder aloud and work things out together as part of whatever you’re doing.

Say your child is building a tower and tells you theirs is taller than yours. You might say, “Yes, your tower is taller than mine! I wonder how many more blocks you’ve used than me?” You could then count the blocks together, compare the two towers or line them up to find out.

Or perhaps you’re sharing some grapes between two bowls. You could ask, “How can we make sure we both get the same?” Let your child have a go and, if they’re not sure, help them along: “Shall we give us one each at a time and see what happens?”

You don’t need to keep asking questions or expect your child to work everything out on their own. You can tell them something they don’t know, share what you notice, give them a little help or figure it out together. It’s simply about making the maths part of the conversation and giving your child opportunities to think and talk about what they’re doing.


4. Try Another Way

Sometimes your child might be learning something that just hasn’t quite made sense to them yet. If that happens, doing more of the same thing isn’t always the answer. Sometimes it can help to show them the maths in a different way.

For example, if they’re learning number bonds to 10, grab ten small toys, counters or anything else you have nearby. Put one on one side and nine on the other, then move one across — now you have two and eight. Keep going and let your child see how many different ways they can make 10.

Or if they’re learning about halves, make it something they can actually do. Cut a piece of toast into two equal pieces, share some toys equally between two people or fold a piece of paper in half.

Your child is still exploring the same maths, but now they can see it and do something with it. And sometimes that different way of experiencing an idea can be what helps it start to make sense.


You don’t need to know everything about maths or have a perfectly planned activity ready. The simple things you do together really can matter.

Each time you help your child see an idea in a different way, wonder about something together or give them time to work something out, you’re helping them make sense of the maths, grow in confidence and see themselves as someone who can do it.

You don’t have to do it all. A game, an activity, a conversation or simply noticing some maths together can all make a difference — because it isn’t only about what your child learns today, but about helping them build the understanding and confidence they’ll carry with them as they grow.
